Looking to introduce your kids to nature and the outdoors? Then the BIG Weekend is the perfect event to bring the whole family too, with expert rangers on hand to tell the story of our local nature and engage your kids in hands on activities looking for hidden beasties or watching some of the most majestic birds soar above them in the skies, this weekend will guarantee ‘ahhhs’ and ‘wow’s’ from everyone.
So what can you and your wee ones get involved with this BIG Weekend?
Join Glen Bear on a wildlife hunt in Glenmore Forest Park! This is a self-guided trail that will lead you to discover the amazing Glenmore forest and perhaps encounter the animals that live there. With plenty of activities to do along the way, this could be the ideal Saturday or Sunday event to combine a good stretch of the legs and entertain the little ones. Fairies are running wild at Loch Garten! Follow this special fairy trail with your kids and meet some of the creatures that live among the trees, of course it wouldn’t be a truely magical experience without creating your own authentic forest fairy wand! There is no booking required for this event, just drop in anytime between 10.30am and 4.30pm on Saturday or Sunday, normal RSPB Osprey Centre entrance fee applies plus £2 per child for Fairy May-hem! If you fancy something a little different but still entirely natural, head on over to the Woolly Woods at Blair Atholl visitor centre. Drop in anytime on Saturday and see some incredible woolly wildlife including eagles, otters, red squirrels, minibeasts and more. P.S did we mention they are all made of wool? The Highland Wildlife Park and RSPB Scotland have joined forces to bring you Hidden Beasties! This free event (entrance fees to the Highland Wildlife Park do apply) will see your kids discovering pond life and wild birds within the wildlife park guaranteeing a day of family fun and adventure. Bring your kids along and join Ranger Neil Taylor on Sunday from 1.30 to 3.30pm and find out a bit more about what goes on in the woods and ponds at Cambus O’May.
